Last year my friend got a speeding ticket, was asked to obtain SR22 auto insurance. He lost his temper when the agent told him he could not do anything now since he is a high risk driver. His auto insurance had sky-rocketed by an additional $425 per month. Very upset about it and on the upbeat he came over to my place. The moment he set his eyes on me, he went in a long brawl making it clear to me that he was completely annoyed with me, since I represented Insurance.
After calming him, I was able to get across the rational thinking and logic of how the insurance companies handle risk. My friend told me that this was the third ticket for speeding in one year. He was also involved in an accident last year and the accident was quite serious but not fatal. He was worked up especially since he was informed that he was a high risk driver. No one likes to be categorized. What really hurts them is that they are labeled as high risk and have to pay dearly. Sometimes they can be asked to have SR22 auto insurance. Obviously finding cheap sr22 auto insurance is a big issue.
Unfortunately the insurance companies need to have some bases or classification for their ratings or deciding on the whether a risk is acceptable or not acceptable as per their underwriting norms and guidelines. When it comes to auto insurance there are two main factors which are considered the vehicle and the driver. The driver is classified into the risk categories based on either the group he belongs to and based on his driving history.
Teenagers or new drivers are classified as high risk drivers since they are prone to speeding are immature and would be more willing to take risk for thrills. Secondly they lack the driving experience and so are more likely to be involved in accidents. The second group which is considered high risk as per the age is persons who are 65 and older. They fall in this category since their vision and hearing are becoming impaired. Another factor which goes against them is the fact that the senior citizens' lose mobility control, along with their reaction time and coordination. It is unfortunate that some people grow older and have to go through the body functions becoming slow, but it happens at some point or another. The insurance companies also consider them under the high risk category.
The second classification for high risk drivers is based on their driving history. These are the drivers who have put themselves in bad situations or lost their motoring skills. They have an adverse driving history of speeding, breaking the traffic rules or got into a number of accidents. A person who has been arrested for a drunk driving or driving under intoxication than this is considered a very high risk driver by the insurance companies. This is because these drivers present the maximum risk and the probability of them getting involved in fatal and deadly accidents is very high. Statistics have proved this beyond doubt.
This little discussion did put my friend at ease. Of course, the next thing on his list was how he could get out of being labeled as a high risk driver and how could he get cheap sr22 auto insurance. This was when my little daughter decided it was her bed-time. I certainly would let him and all of you know this, but for now let me give you a hint. Check it out online; I love writing and giving solutions.
